Albox is a typical Spanish market town, situated approximately 420m above sea level, and approximately 130km from the provincial capital of Almeria. All services and facilities can be found in Albox including shops, banks, post office, restaurants, bars and several builders merchants. There are schools for children of all ages and a 24 hour medical centre. The nearest major hospital is in Huercal Overa, approximately 21km away. Albox has a municipal swimming pool which opens in July and August, a sports centre, and a tennis club which also has its own swimming pool.

The name Albox comes from the Arabic for “tower”, although it is also believed that it comes from “El Bosque” meaning The Forest which is probably why there are trees on the village emblem.

Albox is situated in the Almanzora valley north of the province and covers some 165 kms2. To the north of the town are the foothills of the Sierra de Las Estancias mountain range reaching the dizzy heights of some 1500m. At the top you can see the Shrine of Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados la Virgen del Saliente located in the old monastery now used as a church in Saliente itself.

On the 8th September the town celebrates with a pilgrimage to the shrine, some 16 km's away. The shrine represents the appearance of the Virgen at the end of the 17th century.

Tuesday in Albox is market day, well worth a visit. Divided into two parts, one for fruit and vegetables and the other for just about anything you wish to buy. There is also a smaller market held on Saturday mornings, mostly for fruit and veg but nowadays more and more stalls are appearing.

Albox is now competing with other towns to become the centre of Residential Tourism of Almeria. We have a large number of detached villas for sale in Albox as a result of the tremendous rate of building in the are and the influx of British “ex-pats” into Albox. Albox is located about thirty five minutes from the beach of Mojacar and Garrucha and around an hours drive from Almeria Airport.
